Books From the Bayou

Books from the Bayou is a collaborative effort between the Ernest J. Gaines Center, Center for Louisiana Studies, the UL Lafayette English Department, Vermilionville Living History Museum, and the Lafayette Public Library to explore text and media related to, created in and inspired by South Louisiana and the Acadiana Region. This includes works of Fiction, Non-Fiction, Short Stories, Southern Literature, Poetry, African American Literature, Film, Television, graphic novels, and much more.

This book club will meet once a month to discuss new texts or dig deeper into favorites. Upcoming dates are: April 9, Sept. 10, Oct. 8, and Nov. 12. Titles will be released as they become available.

2020 Meetings

Feb. 13, 2020: The Feast of Saints by Anne Rice. Hosted by the Ernest J. Gaines Center on the 3rd floor of the Dupré Library. The book club meeting will be from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. and copies of the book can be checked out at the Lafayette Public Library.

2019 Meetings

Feb. 7, 2019: The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman Hosted by the Ernest J. Gaines Center on the 3rd floor of the Dupré Library. The book club will be from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Copies of this book can be checked out from the Lafayette Public Library or the Dupré Library ( if you are a student, faculty, staff, or a member of the friends of the library program)

April 11, 2019: Poetry reading with Darrell Bourque. Hosted by the Ernest J. Gaines Center on the 3rd floor of the Dupré Library. This event will be from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. It is free and open to the public
